Flying Tiger Motorcycles in Maplewood /Missouri) is a full service and repair shop, working on all types of motorcycles, from turn of the century Triumph’s to 60’s and 70’s Japanese bikes to new BMW’s. They do everything from oil changes to complete motor rebuilds. But restoration and custom builds is what they really like to do. That’s how the boss, Eric Bess tells the story of this XL1200 cafe racer.

"A friend of mine had been in search of her first bike for some time. She has some experience riding and is a fairly accomplished bicyclist. She loved the café look of vintage bikes, but had access to a friend’s Harley Sportster that had been sitting around. She came in and asked if it would be possible to achieve the look she wanted with the Sportster. After a quick chat, she informed me that she had the bike on the way. What we got was exactly what one might expect of a poorly executed/used and abused 96’ XL1200 chopper. It had the typical fuel stained engine cases and overdone flakey chrome bits everywhere -complete with a classy Jack Daniels bar clamp. We set to stripping off everything that wasn’t essential and getting it in running condition. Once she was purring along, we fabbed a new seat-pan and sent it to local leather guru Rich Phillips to make to a custom ribbed seat. We then adapted an early 70’s Honda CB450 tank and paired it with a Legendary Motorcycles tail section. Electrical items and controls were minimized as the clip-on’s were added, and all the shiny stuff on the bike got the brushed treatment to match the satin finished tank and tail section. Next came some Chainsikle rearsets to replace the forward controls. We bolted up a two into one Super Trapp pipe, which gives the bike a nice deep tone without being obnoxious. We set out to build a clean, minimalist café bike that was user friendly, but it still had to be fun to toss through the twisties. After the first test ride, I think we got it. "
