L'affascinante storia del mitologico Motorcycles' Graveyard e le magiche foto di Abandoned motorcycles....
The two previous photos, taken in April 2010 in Lockport, near New York, by Chris Seward and published on Flickr were exhibited at the University of Rochester, NY last year. The exhibition - Chris says - concerned abandoned places west of New York where the wrecks of several industrial buildings abandoned due to economic changes and the rapid development of infrastructures during twentieth century can be easily found. The replacement of the Erie Canal with the New York Thruway, the crisis of traditional photography, the frenetic development immediately preceding the recent economic crisis have left numerous abandoned buildings in this area that no one has an interest in breaking down to build something new. It seems that the old motorcycles were kept in a place known as Cole's, north of the Erie Canal, but were transported to this sort of magical cemetery following the redevelopment of the surrounding area. The owner died in the 1970s, and the bikes were left to their fate. However, the "motorcycle cemetery" was soon discovered by numerous fans, also following the publication of Chris' photos. Not everyone has just photographed it. Many have thought of recovering souvenirs or taking away some wrecks in good condition. At the end of 2010, the building had been cleaned up and the property acquired by the Lockport Municipality. IMHO, such a place had to be protected by UNESCO!
Le due foto che precedono, scattate ad aprile 2010 a Lockport, vicino New York, da Chris Seward e pubblicate su Flickr sono state esposte alla University of Rochester, NY lo scorso anno. La mostra - ci racconta Chris - riguardava luoghi abbandonati a ovest di New York dove si trovano facilmente i resti di numerose costruzioni industriali abbandonate per effetto dei cambiamenti economici e del rapido sviluppo delle infrastrutture nel corso del ‘900. La sostituzione dell'Erie Canal con la New York Thruway, la crisi della fotografia analogica, lo sviluppo frenetico immediatamente precedente alla recente crisi economica hanno lasciato in quest’area numerosi edifici abbandonati che nessuno ha interesse ad abbattere per costruirvi qualcosa di nuovo. Pare che le vecchie moto fossero conservate in un luogo noto come Cole's a nord dell’Erie Canal ma furono trasportate in questa specie di magico cimitero a seguito della riqualificazione della zona limitrofa. Il proprietario morì negli anni settanta, e le moto furono lasciate al loro destino. Ben presto “il cimitero delle moto” è stato però scoperto dai numerosi appassionati, anche a seguito della pubblicazione delle foto di Chris. Non tutti si sono limitati a fotografarlo. In parecchi hanno pensato di recuperare souvenirs o portarsi via qualche relitto in buone condizioni. A fine 2010, l’edifico era stato svuotato e la proprietà acquisita dal Comune di Lockport. IMHO, un posto così doveva essere protetto dall'Unesco!

Scrive Sean: "In a perfect world, all the warning lights neat the ignition would be flashing bright red...DANGER DANGER...rust...deflated tired...graffiti on gas tank!! Or someone as equally weathered will show up with a gas tank and key, start it up, and drive off with the other motorcycle in two and bike rack [wreck? n.d.r.] ripped out of the concrete Road Warrior style." ...In un mondo perfetto, tutte le spie lampeggerebbero: pericolo!! Ruggine, ruote a terra, grafiti sul serbatoio! Oppure, qualcuno ugualmente provato dal tempo potrebbe presentarsi con le chiavi e una tanica di benzina, mettere in moto e andarsene in due con un'altra moto ed il relitto strappato dal cemento in perfetto Road Warrior Style.
